Pygmalion

On Monday, 4th March, 2024, a group of students from 8th and 9th year watched a play in the National Theatre in Nova Gorica (SNC Nova Gorica) performed by an English drama group ADGE from Munich. The title of the play was Pygmalion and it was written by the English dramatist George Bernard Shaw.

Short summary and trailer are available on the website https://www.adg-europe.com/pygmalion-by-bernard-shaw/

Here are the opinions of the students:

They liked the play, because the actors were good and convincing. It was interesting to hear spoken English. The story was funny, with lots of comical elements, but at the same time it pointed out the problem of women in that period (the beginning of 20th century). The costumes were beautiful and they matched each role.

Students complimented the performance itself, especially the passages between scenes and the exchange of the roles (one actor performed in several roles).

They expressed the wish to see more plays, because they are educational, they bring forward special emotions and everybody can learn something new from them.

A Christmas Carol

On 23rd November, we went to a cultural center in Italy to see a performance of Christmas Carol performed by an American group of actors.

A Christmas Carol is a short story written by Charles Dickens in 1843.

It tells the story of the miserly Mr. Ebenezer Scrooge, who is visited on Christmas Eve by his deceased colleague Jacob Marley who sends three ghosts to him in the hope of a change in Ebenezer’s attitude towards the world. The ghosts represent his Christmas past, present and future, opening his eyes and helping him understand why being stingy and mean to others does nothing good.

The ghost of Christmas past shows him the Christmas in his childhood when he was still a good litlle boy, The ghost of Christmas present shows him the celebration of Christmas at one of his employees house. The employee has a litlle boy called Tiny Tim that is seriously ill but his father can’t help him becuase of the small payment he gets at Ebenzer’s office. The ghost of Christmas future shows him a funeral of a man who the ghost doesn’t let Ebenzer to see. The ghost shows him another funeral too. And that’s the funeral of Tiny Tim who died of his illness. Ebenzer begs the ghost to show him the name of the man at the funeral and the ghost reveals a tombstown with Ebenzer’s name written on it. He realizes that the people weren’t even sad about his death. They were quite happy becuase they had more time to put their finances in order. Scrooge realizes that the only way to change the horrible future that awaits him is if he changes himself and his attitude.

After all of the three ghosts visit him, Mr. Ebenzer changes into a better and kinder person.

I was amazed by the actors and their excelent performance. I really like the massage that the play brings to us all.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

On the 4th of December, students, which participated in English language competition for 8th and 9th grades, went to Gorizia to see a play called A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was performed by members of the English Drama Group from Munster. The play is set in ancient Greece, where Hermia, who is in love with Lysander, is being forced to marry Demetrius, whom Helena loves. Hermia and Lysander then decide to flee to Athens, but Helena and Demetrius follow them. When they are sleeping in the woods a fairy called Puck puts a love potion into their eyes that causes a mess. Demetrius and Lysander both fall in love with Helena and the queen of fairies falls in love with an actor named Bottom, which at that time, looks like a donkey, because of the spell that was cast by Puck. Eventually everything turns out right and Bottom becomes human again, while Hermia and Lysander marry alongside Demetrius and Helena. Throughout the whole 2 hours, the play was giving us very mixed opinions. Although it was hilarious to say the least, some students also pointed out historical inaccuracy with the costumes and some scenes. It certainly was an interesting take to this classic written by William Shakespeare, who is undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest dramatists. We all agreed that although the original Shakespeare’s script was used, packed with old English words and all, the play should at least be titled: A Midsummer Night’s Dream Reimagined. Nonetheless, we still had many laughs and we would recommend it to anyone that has a chance to see it.

ROMEO & JULIET

On January 23, our little group of particapants in the English contest went to see the play Romeo & Juliet to Kulturni dom Gorizia. The play was performed by a very talented acting group from München. The play was about 2hrs long, not too long neither too short. The acting was amaizing. I loved when they included people from the audience in the play, but I didn’t quite enjoy the death scenes. For scenes that should awaken awareness or compassion in the audience, they were rather funny. Otherwise, I loved it.

Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

On Tuesday, 17th December 2013 students of English extra language class went to Gorizia in Italy. In Cultural Centre of Lojze Bratuž we watched the play Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Only 3 actors from München performed different characters. They spoke English so it was more difficult to understand the whole story. The play looked like a horror show at first, but in the story we were able to recognize good and the bad sides in people and the consequences of events.

Lots of students have never had the opportunity to watch a play in another language s this was definitely an interesting experience we’ve nnever done before.

Watching the play was an exelent opportunity to see how good our English is.
